Do you have Alfred's marriage certificate, which will hopefully give his father's name and occupation?

Also, when searching for his birth/baptism, have you tried Thompson?

    Hi Pam

Thanks, unfortunately, don't have wedding certificate and no wedding banns online.

Have searched with Thomson and Thompson.

It seems strange a famous artist who has been researched consistently his parents are unknown.

    Not everything is online.
Order the marriage certificate from https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

Have you searched the British Newspaper Archive (most of which is available on Findmypast) for a marriage announcement or an obituary. Also try The Times Digital Archive which may be free at your local library.

The Times, Friday, November 23, 1979 has a article on his death. It states his father was a civil servant, but does not state a name for him.

articles say he attended the School for the Deaf at Margate. I don't know if their records would exist anywhere?

Thank you very much, will get reading!

Oh for the days when you can order birth, marriage and death certificates and have them emailed automatically after payment.

It does make me wonder if the wedding certificate will hold true?
