Thumbs up Charlotte Taught b. 1818/1819 in East Sussex

    Hi All,
Here is a challenge for you,I am trying to help a friend with her research and we have Charlotte Taught, born about 1818/9 in Hastings, on her marriage certificate to Joseph Carter White, in 1838, in Hastings, her Father was down as James Taught. No where can I find a Charlotte Taught as being baptised, which I believe she must have been because she married in church by banns.
She used the name Charlotte throughout her entire life, but why can't I find who her parents were, well, her Mother in particular? Providing James is her real Father!?
Also, why was her first born child to Joseph called Mary White, not a family name? Any help gratefully received.
Look forward to hearing from you soon I hope.
    Regards,
    Carol

I expect you've explored other Taught births in Hastings around the same time. FMP seems to have baptism records for

    Anne Taught - 1815
    Elizabeth Taught - 1809
    John Taught - 1811
    Mary Anne Taught - 1817

    etc.

I've just explored some of those and the fathers don't appear to be James unfortunately

an Edward Taught married in Hastings in 1852 and his father was a James

Hi, Thanks for taking the time to come back so quickly. I did consider other names born around the same time as Charlotte, but nothing! Where am I going wrong?

I don't suppose you're going "wrong" in any way. James just doesn't want to be found ! I'm now looking for James Taught marriages.

a James Taught married Anne Simmonds, Hastings, 1824.

next previous to that - a James Taught married Susannah Gardiner, Brighton, 1794

I certainly haven't found a baptism for Charlotte.

There is no hard and fast rule about people being baptised, although many people assume you had to be to marry in church. However, it was unlikely that you would ever have to produce documentary proof of that as most people just didn't keep such records.

If you do a global search for James Taught you can find the following:

14 May 1772 married Ann Ailesbree in Hastings
1773 their son James baptised same place. He died 1847.
30 Nov 1794 married Susannah Gardiner in Brighton.

There are a number of merchant seaman records for men called James Taught and one of them was in Horsham gaol for smuggling in 1832.

If James was connected with the sea then maybe Charlotte was born somewhere else entirely.

Hi Megan, Where did you find the record for Horsham Gaol, concerning the smuggling by James Taught?
