Default Royal Artillery Rank Gunner vs L Bombardier

My great grandfather William Bond enlisted in the Royal Artillery in 1867 at the age of 24. His rank throughout his 21+ years of service was Gunner. He spent some time in Malta and also India before returning to England. By 1882 he was with the Regimental District Staff at Woolwich. In 1887 he transferred to the Coast Brigade and was stationed at Slough Fort. In 1888 he moved to Gravesend, I assume to the New Tavern Fort. While there he reached his 21 years but was permitted to continue in the service. On 30 May 1889, he was at long last promoted to Lance Bombardier but on 9 December 1889, his rank reverted to Gunner. He took his discharge not long afterwards on 31 January 1890.

My question is, what are the possible reasons that his rank would have been reverted back to Gunner after six months?

    Hi

Up till the end of WW1 a Lance rank was an appointment, usually for some period or job, when done the actual rank was recorded, which in your case as Gunner. See - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bombardier_(rank) and https://www.greatwarforum.org/topic/...er-bombardier/
