Default MR KAY MEYER- LOTINGA FAMILY CONNECTION

For researchers seeking information on the LOTINGA families of Sunderland and Denmark see the important transcription of the oral account by Mr Kay Meyer from Denmark of his relationship to the Lotinga families. In his account from 1990 he talks about his great great grandparents the Lotinga in Sunderland and Denmark and also about his own life story. See Life Stories.National Life Stories Living Memory of the Jewish Community- Mr Kay Meyer b Oct 1912 interviewed by Carolle Rayner C410/072 Online British Library Board.

I thought it helpful to Lotinga descendants from Sunderland and Denmark to post a small part of the Kay Meyer oral testimony regarding his roots and relationship to the Sunderland and Danish Lotinga lines. This testimony emphasises the crucial importance of oral history in family history even if errors are made. In the case of Kay Meyer he explains why the Lotinga moved from Sunderland to Denmark as well as other family history including the marriage between cousins. His father came from Copenhagen born 1879 and met his wife there. Kay's grandmother was born in Sunderland -
Referring to his grandmother she .."was born ..in Sunderland, in England, and her father was born in Sunderland, and her great grandfather came from Holland and settled in Sunderland. They were ship owners, and in the middle of the ..1860s, ..they went bust, because they were old fashioned they wouldn't convert from sail to steam, and my great grandmother was born in Denmark. Her father came during the progrom wars.. on horseback from Holland to Denmark and his sisters and brothers all went to the North East Coast of England...my great great grandfather was a founder of the Jewish Community; of the Jewish Synagogue in Sunderland and was the first President..The name was LOTINGA.. why did they choose Denmark to come to..Because my great grandfather was born in Denmark, as a cousin. and she married a cousin in Sunderland, and when they went bust he took his family to Copenhagen to be helped by his uncle and father in law and he died very young of a broken heart because the business went bad; and she remained a widow from, she was 28 years old till, 88 years of age and all that time; I had pictures of her and knew her and in all that time she only wore blavk silk.
She had two daughters and two sons and one son died very young and the other one started with two pairs of hands , selling shoe laces and eventually he came into a shoe factory as one of the owners and they had tannaries and he ended up as one of the richest men in Denmark and one of his granddaughters became one of the most famous actresses in Denmark and .. married a future Prime Minister of Denmark.."

There is much more but importantly, this oral statement plus the various records on the Lotinga and Mason show clearly their Jewish roots plus what happened to members of the families in Denmark.
