Default Why register birth with wrong maiden name?

A puzzler. I was unpicking a complicated family - a man with two marriages and at least nine children - when I found three of the children to his first marriage were registered with mother's maiden name Rutty instead of McAuliffe.

I could have assumed there had been a third marriage except there are baptismal records for two of those three children giving the maiden name McAuliffe. Also there is a Mary McAuliffe's death registered in the same quarter as the third Rutty son was born.

    Any suggestions?

Samuel Haywood 1831 and Mary McAuliffe 1839, children Samuel 1862, John 1870, Jane 1872, Esther 1875, Thomas 1878.

Samuel Haywood 1831 and Margaret Taylor 1844, children Herbert Taylor 1880, Margaret 1883, Henry 1886, Septimus 1888 (ninth child Septimus!).

Who were the informants registering the births? I ask as I have cases where a neighbour registered the births and got names muddled.

Have you got the marriage certificate of Samuel and Mary?
Does it say Mary was a spinster or a widow?
Who does Mary say was her father? Does that tally with the details on her birth certificate, baptism record, 1841 and 1851 censuses?
