Default No death record between 1851 and 1861

I am puzzled by being unable to find a death in Wigtown of Elizabeth McKie alive there in 1851 aged 92. I realize that the statutory records don't start until 1855 but does that mean that in most places in Scotland there are no records between 1851 and 1855?

have tried all the usual burial lists and gravestones etc without success but this is such a common name that it seems impossible. Is there a good site to go to in the hope of a will, this lady was fairly well off.

    cheers Ed

Is McKie her married name? If so have you tried searching under her maiden name? It can be a peculiarity in Scotland.

Have you located the lair books for the likely cemetery? Stones cost money that wasn’t always available, but the burial ground admins had to keep track of who was where. However, many Ministers weren’t too worried about details, especially where women were concerned - in one lair book I have seen, women’s were listed under their own names, as a man’s wife (literally, in the form of “Kermit McMuppet’s wife”, or other variations. A few churches still have their lair books, but many are now with the admins ( eg Parks and Gardens, etc).

Unmarried lady and have always searched with spelling variations. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Lesley. Have hunted around for possible location of laird book for the parish church but can see no mention of it on their website. Have also written to a local historian and await a reply.

    Thanks for the pointer.

Clicking on opr 855- 901 Kirkcudbright, Wigtown there seem to be no parish death records held at SP for Wigtown parish.
If that is indeed correct, even if her death had been recorded at the time, no record would seem to have survived.

I would look to see whether there is anything about such records on the relevant page of GENUKI.

You might find the burial ground admins by checking the webpage of the modern county council - that’s why “parks and gardens” came to my mind - they often have responsibility for burial grounds as well.

I would also check the catalogue of the National Archives of Scotland. I don’t have the url to hand, but if you look at the top messages of this General Scottish forum, you will find a collection of “sticky” messages. NAS should be in one of them.

Lesley, the NAS is now the NRS. Like so many of these government sites you need a PhD in obscurism in order to navigate the search system. I have tried a simple search, for instance"Wigtown" and it just reverts to a blank search form. Not even a "no results" message. I know it is probably just me, I have the same problem with the LMA. If I was younger I would do an evening class!

I knew they'd changed their name, that's why I didn't want to give you an url from memory.
I fed the search engine with "wigtown"and got an answer that I have 3064 hits. Try HERE.

Try adding other words such as cemetery or burial ground to reduce the number.

Is this the page? Putting wigtown in gives 3064 hits for me, though you would probably need to be more specific with search terms.
    Lesley beat me to it!
