    Default Wollerton Old Hall

I’m currently trying to research people or families who have lived at Wollerton Old Hall, Market Drayton. I know that it is currently owned by John and Lesley Jenkins. Lesley spent her teenage years at the property before it was sold. In 1984 she and her husband bought the house.

Unfortunately that’s all I know. Lesley is unaware of the names of any of the people who have lived there. Does anybody know the names of any of the past owners?

Shropshire Archives can help in the search, but at a cost of 40 pounds per hour. However it does give some hints as to places to look.See Here
They also run courses periodically for beginners in researching their own house history.

Findmypast have an address search facility on their censuses (and the 1939 Register).
If you know the name of the road the Hall is on it will probably cut down your searching time. Otherwise it's a case of just finding the general area and then working your way through the pages for Wollerton. (If you're really lucky, the Hall might be on the first page.)

Your starter for 10 - in 1861 the inhabitant of the Hall was Peter Downard, who was the curate of Hodnet. RG9/1895 folio 18 page 1.

Try the Leicester University site for directories for Market Drayton/Wollerton.

Electoral rolls for Wollerton/Market Drayton for approximately 1900-1932 don't seem to be online at FMP.

If Lesley has the deeds, they might give some details.

Whether these people owned the Hall or rented it would need more looking into.

Thanks for the help. I had already managed to find the newspaper articles about Walter Haden. I know he was born in Southport, Lancashire and died in Tunisia, North Africa. His father was a dental surgeon born in Russia and who died in Lancashire. Unfortunately I couldn’t work out how Walter acquired Wollerton. If he inherited it it wasn’t his family home.
