No, it is Lavender. All the births check out with MMN as Dundee says. Wonder if Sarah Davidson had married before? Dinner calls will check in later.

    Sarah Jane Lavender

    Born: Abt 1879, Sunderland, Durham
    Marriage (1): Unknown
Marriage (2): Andrew Neil between Apr and Jun 1901 in Gateshead, Durham 4852
Died: Between Jul and Sep 1919, Tynemouth, Northumberland
Buried: 1919, Church Bank Cemetery, Wallsend, Tyne & Wear

    6 children - 5 still living in 1911

Noted events in her life were:

    • Census: Bishopwearmouth, Durham, 1881.
    • Census: Gateshead, Durham, 1891.
    • Census: Wallsend, Northumberland, 1911.

Sarah next married Andrew Neil, son of Alfred Neil and Maria Lavender, between Apr and Jun 1901 in Gateshead, Durham. (Andrew Neil was born on 5 Dec 1879 in Wyke, Yorkshire, England, died between Apr and Jun 1919 in Tynemouth, Northumberland and was buried in 1919 in Church Bank Cemetery, Wallsend, Tyne & Wear 4855.)

This is the details I can find on Sarah lavender in the Wallsend area, but the 1881 census of William and Sarah states she was born Hampshire area.

It’s all so confusing! I’m wondering if I have a mix of two different Sarah’s children??

It gives her 1891 census place of birth as Southampton looking at the image rather than the transcription.

    These are rather Strange:
    1861 Census Portsea, Hampshire
Adam Seager 23 Dock Labourer (Probably Adam Joseph or Joseph Adam - would have to check)
    Martha A Seager 23
    Adam J R Seager 2/12
    Martha A Seager 3
    Sarah J Seager 1
    Eliza Seager 11

1871 census Living Gosport Someone has corrected all the surnames to Seagar
    Joseph Lavender 31 Merchant Seaman
    Martha Lavender 31
    Martha Lavender 12
    Sarah Lavender 11

But no-one has altered the names on the 1881 now living Bishopwearmouth,
    Durham
Sarah is missing but if this is 'our' Sarah then she would be married by then.

Joseph Lavender 39 b Southampton Gas Stoker (Gas)
    Martha A. Lavender 39
    Adam Y. R. Lavender 20
    Charles F.T. Lavender 16
    Elizbeth L.Y. Lavender 12
    Ellen Lavender 10
    Florance T.Y. Lavender 8
    Selina M.F. Lavender 6

Edit: I haven't found a Lavender/Thompson marriage but I suppose it could be they never married. It happens. Martha- mother stays as Lavender to her death no Seager.

Ooh your good!! I would never have found all this!!
It’s now looking a good possibility. Bringing the family from the correct birth area to north east.

There is a marriage record for a William Henry Thompson in June quarter in Newcastle 1881 but can’t find the wife’s to match but possible if they did marry?

    England Marriages, 1538–1973
    Name: William Henry Thompson
    Spouse's Name: Sarah Davidson
    Event Date: 27 Feb 1881
Event Place: St. Johns, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, Northumberland, England

I cannot see a church marriage for William and Sarah Lavender in 1883 so possibly a Register Office Wedding.

Personally I would buy a one of the children's birth certificates as the mother would be named as Sarah Thompson formerly Lavender, + father's name and occupation, address of where born and address of the informant.

    Thompson, William Henry mmn Lavender
    GRO Reference:
    1879 M Quarter in NEWCASTLE-ON-TYNE

Buying the marriage certificate as in post #16 is equally important as it will show their father's names and their occupations. Witnesses can be very helpful too.

You can go horribly wrong if you don't buy the certificates for your direct ancestors.
I assume you have got this far having seen your parents/grandparents marriage certificates etc.
Let us know how you get on.

Yes I think your quite right on purchasing a certificate. Think it’s the only way to get a positive conformation.

Yes I’ve had concrete evidence of other grandparents. I’ve had to purchase birth certs just to get great grandparents names on one line as no living relatives knew anything about them.

It’s not the easiest hobby to take up but well worth the patience and time.

I will let you know the outcome once I have the certificates x

Marriage certificate arrived for great great grandparents

3rd May 1882 parish of St. John’s Newcastle

    William Henry Thompson 39 Widower
    Boiler maker
    Grainger street
    Father William Thompson (deceased). Engineer

    And....
    Sarah Davison 44 spinster
    Grainger street
    Father Robert Davison.
    Watchmaker

So....: solved the mystery of Sarah’s surname! But looks like there was another wife...
