    Default Criminal Registers

What do people think the 3rd name down on this page is?

If I search for him on his own under a variety of names, I think it could be I can't find him, - I can find him by labouriously page turning, and I don't want to do that on every record set...

I would plump for LEA - the L is a smaller version of the L of Lancaster. I'd like to see one of his capital T's.

    I agree - John Lea.

That is exactly what I came up with, so now just to figure out why neither of the major sites seem to recognise him in his own right.

Mind you it could be me having a senior moment!

The Liverpool Mercury, 25 April 1828, reported John Lea's age as 18.

Was he removed to " ... the Penit' (Penitentiary?)...." on May 21st 1828? (FMP)

    I think he was.

I have also just found Kirkdale prison records on FMP which give all the charge details - unfortunately they aren't indexed despite the fact that they are typewritten. However in the same group of records (PCOM2) should be the General Penitentiary records.

Kirkdale was the fore runner to Walton gaol in Liverpool, and the General Penitentiary, also known as Millbank, was the National gaol which was located on the site of where Tate Britain sits today in London.
