Default Photo 2nd Batallion Royal Dublin Fusiliers

Hi I so want to find a photograph of my Uncle Private Thomas Murphy 19545 2nd Batallion Royal Dublin Fusiliers. He died 1.7.16. It would be great to find one of him or if not the batallion that he was in. Does anyone know where I can look. Haven't found anything so far. Many thanks.

    Welcome to the British-Genealogy forums
If you came to us from Forces War Records reading this will explain our connection.

ancestry.co.uk has this record for your Uncle which gives his battalion
    Thomas Murphy
Birth Place - Ballidaggan, Co. Wexford
    Residence - Kiltealey, Co. Wexford
    Died 2 July 1916
Death Place - France and Flanders
    Enlisted at Wexford
    Rank - Private
    Regiment: Royal Dublin Fusiliers
    2nd Battalion
    Regimental number19545
Type of Casualty - Died of wounds
Theatre of War - Western European Theatre

if the family don't have any photographs it is unlikely there will be any in the online records. You could try the local papers of the time to see if there was any mention of his death.

The National Archives have WW1 war diaries Here but it is most unlikely that a soldier of low rank would be mentioned unless for an extraordinary act of courage or something similar.

    Hi

Local papers may also have pictures of the Battalion marching through the town etc, you will not find a photo of him unless a family member already has one.

Thank you so so much I really appreciate the time from both of you, I will look into newspapers now. Sadly we never had a photograph in the family. Thanks again.

I'm not sure about in WWI but in WW2 the local newspapers often had photos of people who were serving.

Not sure how common photos published at the same time as an obituary were. I think that became far more common after WW2 when more people had cameras and therefore had photos to give to the local paper.
