    Default ASC WW1 RECORDS

How can I get a copy/view my grandfather's WW1 ASC records? And does anyone know what the "2" after the "M" in his service number mean (M2 116434 Cpl F Whale). Any help gratefully received.

    Welcome to the British-Genealogy forums
If you came to us from Forces War Records reading this will explain why.

ancestry.com and Findmypast are the two pay per view companies licensed to make WW1 records available online.
However 60% of those records were destroyed by bombing/fire in WW11 so it is a very lucky person who finds their ancestors records.
I took a look on ancestry and found a transcript of a record for him in the Pension Ledgers and Index Cards. Unfortunately I can't view the original because ancestry have it on Fold3 and charge extra to view it. I don't know what their subscriptions are but they do have an offer of a free trial. If you take them up on it be sure to untick the box that allows them to hook you in to a full sub.
I'll take a look and see if there is anything else.
You can also look at The National Archives site for WW1 war diaries and see if there is one for his regiment. Just click on the red menu button at the top of the home page, choose the Research Guides A-Z from the drop down menu then W and go from there.
