    Default Hugh S John Bell

Hugh was born 25th August 1907. I have no idea which country and I cannot find any registration on FreeBMD.

    He died in Brighton.

He married my Aunty - Kate Malings in 1940 in Surrey South. However they separated (although I have no details) but I do not think they ever divorced.

I was told that Hugh was a Policeman and served in Antigua, but this could have just been family gossip.

Anyone have him in their tree?

He's actually Hugh St John Bell as shown on FreeBMD for his marriage registration?
Written with just the S, it looks like another forename is missing.

Just on the off-chance since Scotland isn't on FreeBMD, I've checked and he's not there so that possibility can be eliminated.

The Nottingham Evening Post 1 May 1945 has an article about a Hugh St John Stubbs Bell, former colonial civil servant charged with stealing two coats to sell as he had no money. Mrs Bell gave evidence and was willing to have him back. He came from British West Indies and had worked in the colonial service.

    This looks a possibility.

    Name: H St J S Bell
    Service Date: 1936-1939
    Service Place: Palestine
    Campaign or Service: Palestine
Regiment or Unit Name: Palestine Police
    Regimental Number: 623

Do you have the marriage certificate? This should have his occupation & his fathers name.

Thanks to you all for the information on Hugh. I now know a little more about him than I did before.

I have a feeling I wont be able to find much else about him though.

I would check the Overseas Births / Consular Births. Its possible that his father was a civil servant or a military man and he could have been born overseas.

Try reading through the advice from the GRO below.
