Robert Channing born Dec 6, 1785

I'm trying to located the British family of Robert Channing, born on Dec 6, 1785. At age 25 he was according to Swedish church records at Marstrand, Sweden, a Captain and married to a Swedish woman namned Christina Sällström. Robert stayed in Marstrand for the rest of his life. He remarried in 1835, after his first wife's death, to Albertina Eleonora Zettergren, born in 1806. He fathers 6 children. From the time of his second marriage he is also referred to as the British Vice Consul in Marstrand. He dies on Dec 2, 1857. Unfortunately, there are no mentioning of where in Britain Robert came from and I'm hoping for help finding his place of birth and family in Britain.

I have also found his name in the book: Report from Committees: Sixteen volumes, printed by Harvard Collage Library on page 127:

Any information about Robert and his family in Britain, or any suggestion as to where I can search for further information myself would be greatly appreciated.

Because birth records did not become centralised until 1837 it will be impossible to identify where Robert Channing came from.

However, as he was appointed British Vice Consul I wonder whether there would be any trace of him in the It's Foreign Office records? The National Archives have many guides to finding records, and this one might help you.

It's also possible to have online chats with staff, and to commission someone to search the records for you.

Also perhaps of interest, in March 1842 Robert Channing placed this ad in 'Post- och Inrikes Tidninga' :

”Marstrands helsogifvande Bad-inrättning öppnas den 7 Juni och fortgår till slutet af
September. Då jag kallar denna Badinrättning helsogifvande, torde jag böra nämna de sjukdomar, som densamma i synnerhet befunnits gagna, nemligen gikt och rheumatism-åkommor, alla slags svagheter och lamheter i kropp och lemmar, förorsakade af slag attacker, benbrott eller andra tillfälligheter, åtskilliga invertes sjukdomar, såsom stranguri och gastriska plågor. Äfven lungsigtiga och andra hafva funnit mycken nytta af den helsosamma sjöluften De respektive Herrskaper, som behaga anmoda mig om anskaffande af rum, skola finna all möjlig ackuratess. Priset är, så väl för Badhuset, som i Staden för mindre rum, 16 sk. och större 24 sk. Banko, med säng och möbler.

Thank you Barry! This was very helpful indeed, especially since it has been difficult to track the Channing children and here I found two children that I did not know of before. The ad I have seen and it is quite wonderful - I would have loved to be a guest there at that time. But Marstrand and the presentday Spa-hotel is very nice too .
