    Welcome to British-Genealogy.

Are you talking with regard to a modern-day divorce, or one in, say, the early 1900s? In the US, the UK (and if so which country because Scotland is often different to England and Wales), or where?

To begin with, I would suggest that you use a search engine using a phrase such as 'retainer in a divorce' and add the relevant country, and see what comes up.

Just to clarify - we are a family history forum, and nothing to do with lawyers.
