Since the mid 1990's I've been researching this woman, my 3rd great grandmother.
What I know:
Levenia Jane Bruce born 25 Dec 1830 Powellsville, Bertie County, North Carolina
died 27 Jun 1900 Hempstead, Arkansas
Married Jacob Brown 1847
Just the other day I found out she has a brother: Robert H Bruce 8 Sep 1826/28 Nov 1885
Alternate spellings:
Levina
Louvinia
Lavina
Lavenia
My wall is her parents to continue tracing her line. My whole life I've heard that we're related to Robert Bruce (yes, THAT Bruce). Through another line I've gone back to one of his bastards, but I want to follow THIS line since it's been a stopping point for so many years.

First of all, welcome to the British Genealogy Forum.
Secondly, please remember that in Scotland, “Bruce” is not a rare name. Frequently, genealogical lines seem to lead back to the folk with money because their records were stored in nice, dry stone buildings and have therefore survived... Also, forenames got recycled and recycled, even within a family - if both Grandafathers were called David, for example, families often named two of their boys David. One might then be called by a variation (eg Davie) or a middle name.
I think that the critical question is when the family first arrived in the New World, or more correctly, left Scotland). Levenia is (and variations, the most common version in Scotland is Lavinia but “correct spelling” was a fuzzy concept back there) less common than many names, which should help, but it wasn’t necessarily a Bruce name, it could have come from another family line. Travel papers often give information about origins. Do you know who your New World “founding fathers” were and when they travelled?

Thank you for the welcome.
I get that Bruce is a common name. Ironically, I've been able to trace back to Robert The Bruce through her husband. My grandmother always told me that she thought we were descended from him, but we could never find the link. I finally found it the other day puttering up and down lines in FamilySearch (Mormon Ancestry).
Unfortunately, I don't know who the New World "founding fathers" are. At this point, it's a challenge I refuse to give up on. My research has told me "No, you can't have this information". I'm not one to take "No" with grace. Tell me no, and that's exactly what I'll do.
Thank you for the response and any help that may arise.
