Default JUDAH AND JOSEPH SOLOMON TRANSPORTED CONVICTS

    John
This post is in response to our discussions regarding Judah and Joseph Solomon two brothers who were convicted in 1819 with others of the theft of cash, watches and plate worth £300 from the premises of Messrs Abrahams and Myers pawnbrokers of Mile Town, Sheerness.
John, you had speculated that the two brothers may have been related to Nathaniel Solomon and his father Edward because Nathaniel was born in Sheerness. Having obtained a copy of From One End of the Earth to the Other. The London Bet Din 1805-1855, and the Jewish Convicts transported to Australia. Jeremy I Pfeffer,Sussex Academic Press 2008 the data on the brothers is extensive.

Pfeffer in Chapter 8 of his book refers to the marriage of Joseph Solomon in 1806. This marriage provides crucial data on the father of both Joseph and Judah..."Although no mention of it was made at their trial, Judah and Joseph were in fact brothers, and both had been married and had fathered children prior to their transportation.Joseph was born in London c 1780 and was married on May 6 1806 at the Great Synagogue London."
Synagogue Scribes have the Marriage Record- GSM099/27
Joseph SOLOMON -father's name Isaac STAKENMAN - Father's Hebrew name Abraham our Father

Judith LAZARUS -father's Hebrew name Moshe Defoe (? over written)

Pfeffer continues with his analysis of the marriage record.. "his father is Isaac Shtakenman/Stakenman ( or Stockingman)... Judith's partonymic appears in the marriage register as Yitla bat Moshe which might explain why she was also known in later life as Harriett.

Pfeffer then focuses on the Hebrew for Joseph's patronymic which reads Yosef ben Avraham Avinue, which indicates he was not born a Jew but was a 'Ger'. Evidently, although his father was a Jew , his mother was not at least not at the time of his birth".

On the basis of this data any connection between Nathaniel Solomon/Phoebe de Metz and their son Edward and the two Solomon brothers Judah and Joseph is not based on any direct family connection unless there was a relationship between their father Isaac and the Solomon/de Metz as yet not identified.

In the case of Judith Solomon nee Lazarus, Pfeffer records that over 12 years of marriage she gave birth to seven children but only four survived-Lion Henry one son; 3 daughters Frances,Mary and Sarah.

Of further importance, Pfeffer states that there is no evidence to suggest that Joseph ever lived in Sheerness nor had any particular connections to the place.

    I will post further.

Both Judah and Joseph Solomon aka Solomons were to divorce their wives. Pfeffer refers to The Times Oct 21 1819 article regarding the divorce of Joseph Solomons and his wife Judith while the two brothers were taken from the hulk to board the ship ready to sail for NSW. The divorce record 'Get' was drawn up and Joseph was referred to as Yosef bar Izak Stakilman but on the Ketubah his name was written as Yosef bar Avraham Avinu (i.e. he was a convert. "And so it was decided that since he was born at a time the (his mother) was a gentile, to write his name in the Get as just Yosef.. and the wife's name was Yitla bat Moshe".

A full account of the continuing relationship between Joseph and Judith/Harriett is described by Pfeffer and in other sources.

The complexity of the relationship between Judah and Joseph and possible siblings is described by Pfeffer who in referring to the marriage between Judah Solomon aka Solomons and Esther Abrahams nee Russell ( a widow) states that Judah was recorded as Yehudah bar Avraham.
"Clearly, unless Judah's biological father was in fact called Abraham, in which case he and Joseph were not actually brothers, he too was born a non Jew. Evidently at the time of Joseph and and Judah's birth, their mother had not been a Jewess and their father Isaac Shtakenham, had arranged their Giur, whilst they were still young, as was the common practice in such cases; when or where this took place has not been unearthed.
However, just to confuse matters, there may have been another brother, one who it appears was actually born a Jew. An entry in the register of the Great Synagogue records the marriage on September 13,1797 of one Simon Solomons (Simon son of Isaac Shtakenham) to Tachey Phillips ( Zeph daughter of Pais Beta Phillips) and there is nothing in the entry to indicate Simon was a Ger. If he did have the same mother as Joseph and Judah, he musy=t have been born after she had undergone Giur. Alternatively, he may have been a son of the same Isaac Shtakenman from a different Jewish woman, or of a different person named Isaac Shtakenman." Pfeffer Pp249-250.

As John is aware from our earlier discussions, Esther Abrahams (widow) nee Russell is related to my Russell/Crawcour/Hannah De Lara lines.

This post provides data on the Burial See Synagogue Scribes BSGSBUR 003/23 Nov 22 1791 Kitty (Gitla) SOLOMONS (married name) spouse Solomons (Hessel Stockingman) Partridge Court Gravel Lane. She maybe the wife of Isaac Stockingman the father of Joseph, Judah, Simon

There are several burial records for the children of Joseph Solomon between 1809-1812 and his address in 1812 is Petticoat Square St.Botolph Aldgate.

There is a death of a child of Simon ben Eisak Stockingman May-Sept 1810.

Interestingly Pfeffer refers P255 The Russell/Davis/Davies Scam. This part of Pfeffer's book also refers to one of my paternal Jacobs aka Letson aka Litzen line involvement in the scam.

This scam involved obtaining a Land Grant in NSW by Henry Davis/Davies real name Russell son of Phillip Russell. Henry's uncle was Judah Solomon.

Henry Jacobs c 1793-1862 a glass dealer of Crown Street was the son of Philip Jacobs b abt 1771-1845 and mother unknown. Philip was the brother of Henry Jacobs my 4x great grandfather a glass manufacturer. Their father was David Jacobs aka Letson aka Litzen from Germany my 5x great grandfather- see Jacobstree family history data base for full details of the lines.

Why Henry Jacobs signed a letter with Phillip Russell confirming that Henry Davis/Davies was a reputable person with sound securities is not clear unless there was some kind of business arrangement once the Land Grant was approved as occurred later.
These Russell lines also relate to one of my Hart lines through marriages and this line married into the David Davis/Davies/Crawcour.

More research is needed to tease out further relationships.
