Please note my error in the previous post- the brother in law of David Edward Solomon was DANIEL BARNARD second son of ASHER BARNARD of Melbourne Australia- he married FLORA second daughter of MR J SALOMONS 27 Great Prescott Street Goodman's Fields
Marriage 11.10.1871- the couple lived in Melbourne at 29 Rathdown Street Carlton Melbourne
Berger also lists the births of several children and names them with dob and where they were born.

John
Looking at the UK Directories you can see Nathaniel SALMON Ticket writer 8 Red Lion Street Fleet Street PO Directory 1848. He then appears in 1851 PO Directory 22 Fetter Lane Copper Plate Printer and in 1856 Copper Plate Printer 17 Fetter Lane.
This is a skilled trade and I wonder if there maybe an apprenticeship record for Nathaniel which could re-confirm the 1856 City of London Admission record where he names his father as Edward Solomon solicitor.

That's a great idea - thanks Phillip for all this excellent information. Not only confirms certain facts, but provides real insights into the daily connections and lives of these ancestors.
By the way, unsurprisingly your email inbox is full and rejecting any messages until you create some space. The administrators of the site should give you as much storage as you need judging by the amount of people you help!

John and other researchers
As posted on the 'sticky' part of this forum there are some 3000 family trees held at the Jewish Society of Great Britain- you can see see the names and how many sources per name on the online index. The amount of data and quality of the sources varies significantly.
In addition, the Avotaynu publications also online contain invaluable references to sources including Source Book for Jewish Genealogies and family histories. David Zubatsky and Irwin Berent- this can be seen online in terms of the alphabetical list of names.
The source book gives data on where the collections are held.
The Society of Genealogists in London also contains hundreds of Anglo Jewish family trees and data as part of the Hyamson and Colyer Fergusson collection but these families are usually well known or business people but can also contain requests from family members who wanted help.
There are numerous other sources but the above may help.
John- the above sources include Salmon/Solomon et al but would need consulting to verify their relevance to your lines.
Given that you and your family have family connections I will continue to look further.

Having looked at the known children of Edward Solomon and tracing them in the various census none of them married out of the Jewish faith. Some did not marry at all. In addition, Edward was linked to the Borough New Synagogue. Later on David Edward Solomon married Annette Salomons daughter of Jacob and Eve.
Jacob Salomons was the Secretary of the Hambro Synagogue for many years having succeeded his father who was also secreatry for over twenty years. In turn Jacob was succeeded by his son L J Salomons.
The Jewish Chronicle May 11 1900 reported the Death of Jacob Salomons- On the 6th My corresponding with the 7th of Iyar, Jacob Salomons 17 Beresford Road Canonbury for many years Secretary of the Hambro Synagogue and the Jew's Hospital and Orphan Asylum, West Norwood in his 79th year..
Death-On the 16th July at 95 Park Lane Clissold Park Eve Salomons relict of the late Jacob Salomons (formerly Secretary of the Hambro Synagogue) in her 84th year.. Funeral will leave above address on Sunday next for Willesden at 11 am..
Jewish Chronicle July 17 1903.
Judah Lee Simmonds who married two daughters of Edward Solomon was heavily involved in the Borough New Synagogue as was his father Wolf Simmonds.
This brings us to Nathaniel Solomon aka Salmon b 1813 Sheerness Kent who married out of the Jewish faith as it appears all his children. It would be interesting to know where he is buried and if it was a Jewish ceremony.
The data on Nathaniel regarding whether or not he is the son of Edward does not resolve the question fully mainly because of his naming his father as Edward in 1856 and then George at his wedding.
However, given that Nathaniel married out of the Jewish faith and given that Edward and the family were involved in the Borough New Synagogue and Jewish community it is likely that Nathaniel was not well received which may account for none of his family being witnesses at his wedding and no reference to his lines in the Jewish Chronicle or his death given that his wife and children were not Jews.
It made no sense for Nathaniel to name his father as Edward and give his occupation as solicitor if this was not the case unless he made it up to gain acceptance to the Freedom of the City of London. However, why he called his father George and gave no occupation at the time of his wedding remains an enigma.

This follow up to the issue as to whether or not Nathaniel Solomon b 1811 Sheerness was the son of Edward Solomon 1773-1855 maybe partially resolved in the research of Michael Jolles- see Samuel Isaac, Saul Isaac and Nathaniel Isaacs- Michael Jolles, 1998.
In his publication which also includes the Solomon/De Metz lines, Jolles refers to the Colyer Fergusson, Hyamson and Mordy Anglo Jewish collections held at the Society of Genealogists London. Jolles also includes reference to the work of Mary Brown nee Solomon of South Africa and her father Henry Solomon.
Jolles refers to the Colyer Fergusson family tree and data on Nathaniel Solomon/Phoebe de Metz and her sister Matilda:
' Edward 1773 -1855 married Rachel, and their offspring included 1 Nathaniel b 1811- 2 Joseph Solomon 1812-1860 married Abigail Pass; children included Edward Henry Solomon died 1937 and David Henry Solomon 1853-1905 married Annette Salomon 3 Saul Solomon 1816-1898 married Elizabeth Levy, daughter of Solomon Levy; saul and Elizabeth's children were Joseph 1861, George Goodman 1863, Montague, Frederick, Herbert Lewis, Reginald Saul, Frank, others 4 Benjamin Solomon married Fanny Nathan 5 Others....
Jolles also stated .. ' There was a watch maker called Edward Solomon mentioned by Cecil Roth as living in Margate 1799 ( Roth RPJ p 21).Mary Brown records that Edward had written to his brother Saul Solomon on 17.10.1845 from Chester Terrace, Southwark. Edward's son,Saul had a widow who was met at her address in Bayswater (1901) by Mary Brown.
See Conditions and Memories concerning our grandparents Joseph and Hannah Solomon (1908) Mary Brown nee Solomon. Solomon Family Collection MSB 475, 3 (4/2) South African Library. Mary died in 1935.
Mary Brown records that ...' Another relative quite remarkable in her ways is Mrs Godfrey; she was greatly loved by my father ( Henry Solomon) as Rachel Isaacs and was the daughter of Lenie, a sister of Saul and Joseph. Among the bequests conferred on the sisters by Saul Solomon in 1845 mentioned by Edward is ' to Lene Isaacs money due to her from our dear mother God rest her soul, ninety pounds'.
Jolles qualifies the relationships and states 'It seems that Mrs Brown is mistaken about Mrs Godfrey's mother who would be Catherine Solomons ( Isaacs )'.
As Jolles rightly states the various Solomon et al relationships that he has identified in the Anglo Jewish Collections require verification.
