Hi all,
The Brogden company spread its wings beyond its homeland, sending labourers across the oceans to New Zealand in 1872 and 1873. I am attempting to trace who they sent and where they ended up, as they did not all stay in New Zealand. I have passenger lists for 11 of the 15 ships sent, while the final four unhelpfully include the information "xx for Brogdens".
Having begun in New Zealand, I am interested to see if any records of the immigration scheme survive in the UK. I have searched the National Archives catalogue, and spent time in the records of the NLW. Is there anywhere else I should be searching for records of a private company involved in the construction of railways at home and abroad?
Thanks!
Delwyn

A very warm welcome to Brit-gen
Welsh newspapers online https://newspapers.library.wales
In Search field enter "john brogden" including the quotation marks (important) and restrict year to 1872 using slider bars. Should return 27 hits.
Top left hand corner of screen - field marked "search within these results" - enter "zealand" (this time you don't need the quotation marks). Should return 15 hits.
Doesn't answer your specific question but is an insight into the activity going on at this end of the line."dyfal donc a dyr y garreg"

Expanded search period to 1870-1873. Brief (very) mentions in 1873 of the arrival of the 12th and 13th ships sent.
(Interested to note that one of the major works of the company was close to my home town)"dyfal donc a dyr y garreg"

Hi helachau,
Thanks for that information. It's interesting to see how there was no reporting of any difficulties the firm was encountering.
I wasn't able to use the link you provided as my browsers wouldn't let me. I was able to get the site by searching for it and it appears to not use the https bit.
Thanks so much for your help.

Thanks for your reply. I hadn't seen the Metcal Memoir before. Graces Guide is a good rundown on the whole of the trials and tribulations the Brogdens' endured.
I am hoping that someone is able to locate something that would show a record of the people sent as they owed the company money. It all hinges on whether or not the records have been preserved in an accessible location. So far it is not looking promising...
