The article is dated 1907 and the child was "newly born". I doubt that it is the same Martha RHODES as she would have been aged 30.

WOW! There is a lot more to this than I ever imagined. I agree that the Liverpool links are unrelated as I can find no other family connection to that area.
Thank you all for your efforts.

Just because the article was not published in 1901 proves nothing May be she was not brought to court right away after the death of her son.

Sorry, Sandyhall, but I have to agree with Dundee10 that the 'newly born child' is not Cecil James Rhodes who must have been at least six months old when his death was registered in June quarter 1901 (Uxbridge registration district).
However, I do partly agree with the bit in bold, in so far as you have to be aware that people are not necessarily charged with a crime immediately after the crime was committed. But in this case a specific date was given (15th of October) and I'm sure that if it had been in an earlier year it would have also said the year.
GRO Historical Births Index has a Male Rhodes, December quarter 1907, Preston registration district, no mother's maiden name.
There is also a death registration for a Male Rhodes, December quarter 1907, Preston registration district, age less than a year, and I would assume they refer to Martha's child.
