Scotland's People has this transcript:
Robert SHANKLAND m. Mary GLENCROSS 1892 Sanquhar (10k from Durisdeer).
Perhaps her husband died and she reverted to her maiden/previous surname. There is a death record which would fit:
Robert SHANKLAND d. 1904 Kirkconnel, aged 36.
The marriage certificate could reveal whether Mary was a spinster or otherwise but I haven't any credits to take a look.

There's also a death cert for Mary Glencross cross referenced to Shankland. Age 72, d.1944, Old Cumnock. As Peter said for Robert, the death cert should explain all (assuming the informant knew, of course).
In the 1901 census, Robert & Mary are in Durisdeer, Dumfries - Robert's a railway surface worker. Young Robert (b abt 1893) is there, with 3 sisters.
Mary was born Glencross abt 1876, she's with her parents (and 2 brothers, 1 sis) in Sanquhar in 1901.
In the 1911, she's listed as Shankland, in Kirkconnel. The 1911 is only on Scotlands People, so I haven't seen the whole household.
