    Default Henry COOLEDGE b c1887 Bayford Herts - WW1

    Mis-filed in the CLA section of the WW1 Service Records (WO 363):

    Henry COOLEDGE attested for the Bedfords on 7 September 1914, declaring age 27y 9m, born Bayford, Herts.
    Mother: ELLEN;
    Home address: ESSENDON;
    Previous service: Coldstreams, discharge 1907;

    Henry's Medical found that he had flat feet - he was discharged 14 November 1914 (not likely to become an efficient soldier).
    But he may have been called up later - the Army became less fussy!

    Looks like you're right again Jane.

    There is record for him in “Soldiers Died In The Great War 1914-1919”
    1/7th Battalion Middlesex Regiment, killed in action 7th October 1916. Home address Essendon, Nr Hatfield, Herts.

    Also “Army Registers of Soldiers Effects 1901-1929” has his mothers name as Ellen.

    Peter
