Hi all, we are looking into our family history and came across a photograph of my great grandfather Frederick Walter Salmons. We are not 100% on what uniform he is wearing but we think it may be Royal Horse Artillery. If anybody knows anything about the uniform or regiment that would be a great help. He was born in Ely, Cambridge in 1892 so we are not sure what regiment location he would have been in.
We have an Ancestry subscription but cannot find military records for him.
Kindest regards,
Darren.

Welcome to the British-Genealogy forums
If you came to us from Forces War Records reading this will tell you why.
It certainly looks like the cap badge of the Royal Horse Artillery from doing a google search.
There should at least be a Medal Roll Index Card and Medal and Awards entries for him on ancestry. Have you searched just using the surname Salmon* and the regiment name. Just keep swapping around your search criteria.
The above two sets of records are the best bet because of the service records for WW1 60% plus were destroyed by bombing/fire in WW11. If this is what happened to your great grandfather's records then to get a general idea of where and when he served you can look for the War Diaries on The National Archives site.

The badge certainly appears to be an RHA or RFA one, it also looks to have the short banner beneath the crown which carried the word UBIQUE, there were some county badges with the name of the parent/county regiment.

Some other info we found is the Medal Roll information. Cannot distinguish what some of the information means other than driver, reg number, etc.
Forces war records has him as regiment 41725 but medal roll has him as 42725. Obviously, anything that predates 1920 may be duplicated as there was no individual soldier numbers before 1920.

The medal card shown for Fred Salmons indicates that he served with Royal Field Artillary and was awarded the following WW! medals:-

Hi
It also says he entered a theatre of war as France (in the list as no 1) on 4/9/15 and was a Driver in the RFA with regimental number 42725
The stamp in the top rhs shows his medals as above and refers to the medal rolls, which for artillery probably wont show any more details, but always worth checking.
read here - https://www.longlongtrail.co.uk/soldi...medal-records/
eg, his Victory and BWM are listed in Roll RFA170B on page 13964 and 15 star in roll RFA/3AB on page 3569
