    Hi Megan

If you are using Ancestry (for which I now have a 14 day trial) to find that information on my family, could you possibly send me some links - as I keep searching for Frederick William Smith but can't find the census entries you mention for some reason - thank you

    No problem:

This is his WW1 service record
    https://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bi...=successSource
If not find the record set called British Army WWI Service Records, 1914-1920 from the CARD CATALOGUE and put his name in and year of birth and you will find him.

I will look for the others and post those.

This is one record that I did not mention:
England & Wales, National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations), 1858-1966, 1973-1995
If you look at the original record you will see that Administration of his estate was given to his widow, and the estate was valued at £271 18s. Administration means that he did not have a Will.

1891 Census for the Smiths, in the search box you can use these references:
    Class: RG12; Piece: 1518; Folio: 77; Page: 25
The link below might also work
    https://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bi...=successSource

    1901 Census (just found it!)
    Class: RG13; Piece: 1834; Folio: 112; Page: 41
    https://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bi...&rhSource=6598

    1911 Census
    Class: RG14; Piece: 11256; Schedule Number: 500
    https://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bi...&rhSource=7814

I don’t know how familiar you are with Ancestry but when you are looking at a record summary (i.e. not the actual document) on the right hand side of the page you will see a box headed up “Suggested Records”. These are not necessary records that correctly relate to the person you are looking at, but some are and can be very useful leads. So for instance by clicking on Frederick’s brother Ernest in the 1911 Census one of the suggested records that comes up is the “UK, Army Registers of Soldiers' Effects, 1901-1929”, and by looking at it I can see that it was indeed his brother who died in France on 29 Oct 1918 at 9 Gen Hos, because it lists their mother as his next of kin.

    Hi Megan

Okay I think I have now found the 1891 and 1911 census you mention - thanks

I also think I might have found the missing 1901 census - names were abbreviated it seems which is why it didn't come up initially

Trying to work out when George's first wife Susannah died, as he got married again so assume she must have died

Found these records in maiden name but one of them is for premium members only so can't view it - can you?

As you are on a free trial, if you don’t intend to stay with them at the end of the period make sure that you are not subscribed – that’s what a lot of the free offers do.

The two records that you have identified both relate to the same lady.

The first one is her death registration and is from the GRO, and you can either look at the GRO’s own web site (which is where you order certificates from – never go through a third party) or to FreeBMD, and see the same the information for free:

    https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/

    https://www.freebmd.org.uk/

The second one is her burial record. She’s not the lady you are looking for because she was married to a James Golden, and was living with him in 1891.

I can’t find a death record for Susannah Chaney, and can only think that her surname has been “mangled” in some way in the death registration index. Its more than likely that George would have not have bothered to get a copy of her death certificate, because he would have had to pay for it. So it is sometime between 1891 and 1898.

Ignore the links and select the census you want from the home of Ancestry on the right hand side at the top of the page.

So for instance click on the 1891 census, and then when that is selected scroll down the page and you will see a heading "included data collections". From that list select England, and then use the references that I have given you to fill in the appropriate boxes i.e.

Piece: 1519; Folio: 132; just putting in at the top the name i.e George Chaney
