    Thanks Almach
Wow, that ties some of the questions up nicely, but I'd still like to find the 1881 & 1891census entries as his address at that time might help tie him and Sarah Bowles together.
    Great work and thanks again.

This looks like his return trip to England. Record has middle initial 'E' but a 'C' could easily be mis-read as 'E'

    Mr D E Selman, Age: 46
    Port of Departure: Sydney, Australia
    Arrival date: 18 Feb 1903
    Port of Arrival: London, England
Ports of Voyage: Melbourne; Cape Town; Plymouth, Devon, England
    Ship Name: Medic

David moved from NSW to South Australia

    Aug 1901

    https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/228281856

Among those who were retrenched by the Public Service Board from our civil service the name of Mr. D. C. Selman, formerly assistant Superintendent of Technical Education in New South Wales, will still be remembered by many friends. Mr. Selman, it will Interest them to know, is now connected with the South Australian School of Mines and Industries.......

    Dec 1902

Through failing sight. Mr. D. C. Selman. lecturer in mechanical engineering, and formerly assistant superintendent of technical education in New South Wales, had been advised to take a year's complete rest, and consequently he would shortly leave for England. Mr. Selman was as popular as he had been efficient in the discharge of his duties, and regret was general at his having to give up his position through the calamity which had overtaken him.......

I'm not in any way questioning the man's achievements or what has been found about him, but I'm afraid this anachronism grated slightly:

Bristol University received its charter in 1909, and Bath in 1966, though there were precursor institutions in existence in the latter part of the 19th century. University College Bristol was one of these; the Merchant Venturers' College another. In fact the Merchant Venturers' College seems to have played a part in the founding of both universities - for more on this see

Thank you for pointing that out. I took the information from Prof Selman's application to the Institution of Civil Engineers. He correctly refers to University College Bristol, and to lecturing at Bath. My inaccurate abbreviations were included for reasons of brevity, in a request which I feared might be overly long.

Fair enough, and I may have been over-pedantic, but lots of people read this forum who may not have appreciated that.

My thanks to all of you for the invaluable help, which has helped to paint a much more detailed picture of David Codrington Selman up to his sad demise in 1906.
I am, however, still unable to make headway with Sarah Alice Bowles. I have the 1871 Census record, and also that for 1901 after her marriage to William Stent Dunham (where her daughter, Dorothy Bowles, is described as "niece"), but I cannot find the 1881 record for her (age 14) or her parents (John and Mariah Penelope).
Even more importantly, I cannot find her in the 1891 census, either in her own name, or as Maud Alice Selman (as she appears in her daughter's birth certificate), or as Sarah Alice Selman. I'm guessing the Selman surname as the 1891 census record for her daughter shows her as a "Nurse Child" with the Selman name (thanks Dundee 10).
I also wonder if daughter Dorothy's appearance in 1891, living with a family in Southampton could in any way be linked to David C Selman's departure from that port in 1890?
It even occurred to me that Sarah might have left England with David but returned shortly after, but again can find no evidence to back this up.
Again I'll appreciate any and all help given.
