My grandmother has a WW1 death penny for a soldier who fought alongside her father in the war. His name was Charles Herbert Price and he didn't appear to have any family at the time of his death, so all of his affects were left to my great grandfather. I thought that maybe if I could find some relatives of his, they might like to have the penny and a photograph that we have of him with my great grandfather.
Unfortunately, his family are proving to be rather elusive. Here is what I have managed to find out so far:
Charles Herbert Price born in Woolwich (Kent) in 1881 - found this in military records.
His birth record shows that his mother's maiden name was Parsons.
In 1879, Thomas Price married Esther Parsons in Farnham - this location seems to fit with the fact that Thomas was in the military (according to census records and Charles' baptism record)
In 1891 census he is living in Chalvington, Sussex with his parents, Thomas and Esther Price:
Class: RG12; Piece: 799; Folio: 41; Page: 14; GSU roll: 6095909
In 1901 census, his parents are living in Barcombe, Sussex, but Charles is not living with them:
Class: RG13; Piece: 914; Folio: 116; Page: 3
Charles' father died in Lewes in 1908
In 1911 census, he is living with his widowed mother in Lewes:
Class: RG14; Piece: 5059; Schedule Number: 122
In 1915, he enlisted in the Royal Field Artillery in Bury St Edmunds. His reg number is 82042
In June 1918, he died in the field in France.
After that the trail runs cold. I thought that, as Charles appeared to have no family when he died, his mother must have died before 1918. So far, I haven't found any death records from that time. The only one I have found in the right area is from 1946 at the age of 99 which makes her 4 or 5 years older than expected. If she did die that late, then why is her name never mentioned in any of Charles' military records?
I realize that I might be able to get more information by ordering a copy of Charles' will and a copy of his parents' marriage certificate, but that is £20 I can't afford right now!

I would say she was actually born closer to 1846/7 than 1850/51.

Doesn't look like Thomas and Esther had any other children. Or that Charles married and had any children. So there wouldn't be any direct descendants to pass the penny on to.
