HICKS/BARNETT Marriage

Folks,
On 1861 census appears Charles Hicks b 1832 Yaxley,Huntingdonshire,his wife,Mary Ann b 1838 Sawtry,Huntingdonshire.
Hester Hestead Hicks b 1854 Walford,Herefordshire.(birth registered Thornbury,Gloucestershire)
Henry Hestead Hicks 1857 Deeping St James,Lincolnshire.
By 1871 Hester is not present but another son,John Joseph Hicks b 1869 in Yorkshire.
I have not been able to find the marriage of Charles and Mary Ann but noted she would have been 16 when Hester was born and may have been a second wife.Using GRO index i checked mothers maiden name for all births,Hester nothing shown but Henry and John show Barnett.
I have been unable to find Sawtry PR's online to confirm her birth,nothing on Freebmd.
Any suggestions welcomed.

Hi Eric, I've been looking at your query and here are my findings.

First, it is possible Hester was registered Esther.

According to the 1861 census Hester was born abt. 1854 Watford, Hertfordshire

Her birth registration has no mother's maiden name listed, which usually means an illegitimate birth!

GRO Reference: 1854 S Quarter in WATFORD UNION Volume 03A Page 249.

Mary Ann Hicks as you said is entered as age 23 in 1861, however in 1871 she's 41; in 1881 age 51; and 1891 age 61. It therefore seems more likely she was born abt. 1830. I also noted in 1881 her birth place is entered as Glapthorn Nothamptonshire, the other censuses Sawtry

I then found this 1851 census, which an Ancestry member has offered an alternative name to of HORSTEAD

If the above are the folks you are researching, and they look very likely, then it's also likely Charles and Mary Ann didn't marry as I think Mary Ann's husband, William Hostead, was still alive until at least 1901.

In 1861, he says he's married, but there's no wife with him. RG 9; Piece: 963; Folio: 92; Page: 1

1881 he has a wife Elizabeth, (no marriage found, as yet) RG11; Piece: 1587; Folio: 96; Page: 13

1891, with Elizabeth RG12; Piece: 1224; Folio: 85; Page: 9

1901, still with Elizabeth. RG13; Piece: 1456; Folio: 75; Page: 8

In 1881 William and Elizabeth have a John Goodwin age 27 with them, he's described as stepson, so presumably Elizabeth's son. In 1891, they have John age 37, now Hostead, and 1901 John Goodwin 46, son.

Most of what you found checks out!I had seen a tree on Ancestry with the Hostead connection but it lacked detail so i chose to skip it to avoid confusing myself.
William Hostead married Elizabeth Goodwin in Oundle Oct 1872.
