"His name was John Hovelroude Anderson, and he was born on the 26th February 1879 in Dundee. I heard from my father that he was a whaler, which is very possible as Dundee was a major whaling port. The RNR service record covers some of the ships he sailed on from 1905 while he was doing his training. But I'm struggling to find out much more from the crew lists I have been able to track down." Ancestry has a death record for Acting Leading Seaman John Anderson RNR born 22 February 1879, Dundee died 9 July 1917, SS Caliope.

Though I have another date for SS Caliope being sunk on 12 July 1917 - 150 miles off Madeira ?

Welcome to the British Genealogy Forum.

If you are interested in doing some research yourself, have a look at the messages at the top of the General Scottish Forum (click HERE), and marked "sticky". Start with the Statutory Records one.
Just watch out, genealogy research is a bit addictive!

For example, I see that Chris has found their marriage in 1869 on the FamilySearch index. If you buy a copy of their marriage certificate from Scotlands People, it will give you the names of both sets of parents, the occupations of the groom, bride (if she had a job) and both fathers and whether the parents were alive... It's a pretty good paper trail to follow.

Since you are new, you may also find a message that I posted in another forum HERE useful. It just explains the sort of information that can be included in a post and helps us to help you.
