    Default Profession query on census

Hello I am trying to research my mums maternal family tree for a birthday present for her 80th birthday this September. She has no living family so i can only go on what she has told me in the past about her family and a photo album that was left by her brother with a few notes about her family. I am researching the tree as a surprise for her but must admit i am stuck and wondered if anyone can help or point me in another direction. I have gone back to her great great grandmother born Caroline Stokes (I know this as it is on her daughters birth cert) born 1803 in Dunmow Essex. She married Samuel Jarvis born 1804 Northamptonshire, again i know this as i have found the 1841 1851 census. I cannot find their marriage anywhere and am exhausted looking for it. I cannot find them on a 1861 census, but she pops up on the 1871 census with her maiden name and living in the same house as her daughter Caroline, which is my mums great grandmother, but her listed profession is a word i am having trouble trying to make out it looks like Unmmitand or inmmitand, And i cannot make out her 'condition' it doesn't say widowed. So i am wondering maybe they never got married? I would be very grateful if anyone can help as i would love to progress further back if i can, as my mum lives in Essex and all her family came from London, so it would be great if i could go back to her Essex roots. Much appreciated Sharon

    Hello Sharon,

    Welcome to British-Genealogy.

I presume you're referring to the Caroline Stokes living in Limehouse in 1871? Census reference RG10/550 folio 130 page 14.

Her condition is 'um' for unmarried, and her profession is (a badly-spelt!) annuitant. i.e. receives an annuity - usually a fixed amount of money - each year.

Baptism record for Caroline Jarvis at St Mary's Whitechapel says she was born 21 October 1835. Daughter of Samuel and Caroline of Northampton Street. Father's occupation carman. Ancestry have surname as Jervis, and baptism date as 18 May 1837, though the parish register (image available on Ancestry) clearly says 18 June 1837.
