Barbara, we do not allow duplicate threads about the same people as it causes confusion and can lead to wasted time of duplicate research.

I have therefore moved your newest post to the your original thread; re-titled it 'Miller/Huntley; and moved the whole lot to the Brickwalls forum.

In fairness, I note that you say you doubt this
Verbal history has it that my Grand mother,Dorothy was born in Sunderland and came to SA when she was 12. (I doubt this) but has to be noted.
but that has to be untrue if her SA baptism entry in May 1913 says she was born about three weeks earlier in April 1913.

I'm no expert in Southern African research though I understand that some records are difficult to access, but what
actual documentation do you have for the births/baptisms/marriages/deaths/burials of Dorothy, plus her siblings John and Charles, plus parents Charles and Adelaide/Ada? Do birth years tie in with ages given on marriage certificates/death registrations? And what exactly do any of those documents give as regards details of parents' names?

According to Dorothy''s father's military records,he was from St Pancras.
If this SA or British military? And if British, are they online on Ancestry or FMP? Either way, what other details do they give? birthdate, parent's names, etc.

Would it be possible for someone to check if her mother's name was AdeLaide and whether she came to South Africa? Please.
Highly unlikely to be your Dorothy.
Birth registration was March quarter 1913 which means that she must have been born somewhere between approximately 20 November (allowing for the maximum 42 days in which to register a birth) but definitely no later than 31 March 1913.
Also her middle name began with the letter S.
Plus, as Sandyhall has pointed out, Guildford is a long way from Sunderland. (In excess of 200 miles, even in a straight line.)

If you did want to really rule her out then you can obtain a PDF copy of her birth certificate for six pounds. A little more information about PDFs

Hello Pam.Apologies for unintentionally flouting the rules and thank for for the guidance.
I agree with your observations re Dorothy''s birth dates. I have a Baptism and death certificate for her and a grave. All the dates correspond.I have applied for a birth certificate (it could take a while).
I have Baptism, marriage and death entries for her siblings John and Charles with parents Charles and Adelaide. Dates work. I have a marriage certificate and divorce papers for Charles and Adelaide. There are no parents names for either of them on these documents.I have documents which indicate that Adelaide is destitute after their divorce in 1929.I have not found documents for her death.
    Charles''s military records are British.B:1890 quarter 3 Vol 1B Pg 77.Pancras England.F:John Huntley M:Charlotte.
I used a local genealogist to source these documents. All the dates seems to correspond.
The only conflicting info is Adelaide''s abbreviated name on Dorothy''s Baptism. We have not been able to establish Adelaides origin of birth which is where I am stuck.

I have e-mailed my friend in SA regarding records this is what she tells me as there are no names in it I have shared it - Sandie

As for SA records ALL BMD's are only available from the Dept of Home Affairs and that dept of all the govt department is the WORST – you MUST pay a private researcher who can go to the Archives and maybe find what you need OR to know the church where the event took place and hope they still have records –the NAAIRS website may have Estate records, if the persons had fixed property – that will give the date of death or if they were involved in a court case you might be able to glean odd bits of information eg like where they were resident at the time. You can see some info on the NAAIRS site but you would need to buy the file to read anything of value. We got adoption papers from 1921 from the Cape Town Archives by a person going there, paying for the file to be drawn and photocopied – it was a very small amount of money and revealed tremendous amounts of information, including a correct birth cert from Scotland but that is a rare, rare case. That is the reason why so many people in South Africa whose grandparents came from England are not able to trace their English rellies because they have no idea which of the eg George Carter's on UK records is their grandfather, because their own parents do not have am SA marriage cert, lost or never received, but most likely because we have used ID books which state birth date (no place, no parents names) married, date and place (it was a sticky back paper that was pasted into our ID books by the Vicar at the signing of the register.. since the middle 1970's. My sister-in-law required birth certs for her two boys they all live in Australia since 1983, when she was on a visit she went to the hospital just outside Cape Town where the boys were born – it was a private hospital - and was shown into a filing room and told look in there, there were volumes on the floor, pages torn out so you don't have to pay for a photocopy we presume, very little was in any order, miraculously she found both her boys and had copies made and she offered to return the volumes to the filing room – it was declined!!!!! She was extremely lucky because her boys were 36 and 31 at that time. So as you can see Ancestry in SA is not a hobby for anyone unless like John and I our parents were from England and we have some first-hand knowledge of grandparents to be able search in UK. There is very, very little on Family Search and I did find some bapts for someone but the church location was completely wrong. I know that because the town they were bapt in is next to where I live and the location of the church was recorded by volunteers or got mixed up in the computer as Pretoria – some 50kms from us and in the early 1900's that would have been an impossible journey for a bapt when the local Anglican church was just a stone's throw away from the mine where the father worked so be very careful if you use any of their SA information. I tried to contact the mine but that has been taken over by locals and they have no records, and I quote …"all old paper is destroyed we have no use for that things"

Having told you all that there is very little possibility of getting any useful info from anyone in SA unless you are prepared to pay big bucks… really sorry not to be able to of more help – this is a 4th world country now!!!! No that it was easier pre-1994 but it would have been a little easier.

Hello Sandy. Thanks do much for sharing this insight. I did use a local genealogist to source the information that I have to date. He unfortunately was not able to trace Adel aide.

I think the one I gave you in Sunderland is a possible.

Just a thought have you had your DNA tested with Ancestry as they can match it with other people who have trees on Ancestry. A lady in Australia did hers as her father was sent out with the Home Farm Children (Britain sent children to Canada, Australia as workers on Farms) He knew his mothers name but not his father her DNA connected her to my cousins daughter's tree who told her to contact me as I was the one who had done all the research, turns out his mum and my Grandmother where sisters. Absolutely no one in the family knew anything about this man in Australia but we did know of his mother she married and went to Canada with luck she now has an extended family no only in England and Canada, as her father had a Step-brother.
    sometimes you get lucky.
