Thank you, Mr Goodey for your reply i will try and get a better scan, the certificate , is not very good at all,

Try scanning just the left-hand side of the certificate as well. There's plenty of writing on it for comparing how some of the letters are written.

It looks like Deuter Nautch Theustead but I can't find that anywhere.

Crucially, we forgot to ask David where the marriage took place. I'm presuming Australia, but I could be wrong.
It took place in 1879, and I expect we've all seen weird and wonderful spellings from people in that era.
I think it will come down to trying to interpret what's written (and I would agree with your transcription), then say it out loud in various accents and see if you can find somewhere in Germany that sounds like it.

I'm wondering if the last word could be Neustadt. However I still can't work out the Deuter Nautch.

I wonder if that's supposed to say something like Deutsch (for German) and then the equivalent of 'national'. However when I put 'German national' into an English to German translator it doesn't come out anything like Deuter Nautch.
Added: Sometimes I astound even myself with my genius.
