Default ELLIS JAMES DAVIS 1850-1905-ANITA DAVIES

I have posted this new thread as a follow on from the earlier thread Amelia Hart 1843-1907-Davies-Wileman-Coopman.
This new thread links the Hart-Davies-Davis- Coopman lines through marriages and births. I explained in the earlier thread that Amelia Hart 1843-1907 daughter of John Hart and Elizabeth Jacobs had married Maurice Davies son of David Davies and Ann Crawcour but that the marriage had ended in divorce and separation. Amelia had later married Arthur Francis Wileman in 1892.

Amelia's daughter Annie Elizabeth b 1867 aka Annie aka Anita aka Nita married Ellis James Davis in 1896.
I will post on Ellis James Ellis 1850-1905 and his parents and first marriage. A child was born from the second marriage- Eliza Athalie M Davis March qtr 1903 Marylebone 1a 520. She was known as Athalie and became a silent film actress dying in 1988.
I was also provide data on Athalie's marriage to Betram COOPMAN and the birth of their son Peter Coopman and his death WW2.

Ellis James Davis was the son of James Phineas Davis solicitor and Eliza Davis ( 1st cousins)- see Cemetery Scribes James Phineas Davis 1812-1886 ID 945 and Eliza Davis 1817-1903 plus Synagogue Scribes Marriages GSM 305/40 15 June 1835. The parents of James Phineas Davis were Phineas Davis and Jane Isaacs see their marriage Synagogue Scribes GSM 120/28 27 June 1809.

James Phineas Davis wife Eliza born Montego Bay Jamaica was a well known philanthropist and there are letters between her and Charles Dickens regarding the portrayal of Jews in his books.

James Phineas Davis appears with his family in several census:

The Following is the GRO Marriage Certificate for Ellis James Davis and Anita Davies:
New West End Synagogue Paddington London
    10 June 1896
Ellis James DAVIS 45 widower Barrister at Law Welbrick Mansions Welbrick Street- father James Phineas Davis Solicitor

Anita DAVIES 25 spinster no occupation 18 Bolton Gardens West, South Kensington father David Davies deceased Gentleman

Married according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Jews, by Certificate

    Witnesses- I Seaman; David Phillips

There are 2 key issues relating to the Marriage Certificate- Anita aka Annie Elizabeth was born in 1867 and the various census records for her dob vary between 3 and 7 years with a dob in the 1901 census giving an age of 27 and by 1911 age 40. There is no doubt she is one in the same person because she is with her mother and brother in earlier census.

Her father was Maurice Davies a Professor of Music and his father was David. It is not uncommon feature for Ashkenazi male Jews to adopt the name of their dead father as part of their first and middle names and I suspect that maybe a reason for the name David being given on the marriage certificate. However, Maurice did not die until 1902- GRO Death Index Maurice Davies b abt 1824 age 78 Jan qtr 1902 Paddington 1a 43.

Looking at the attempt to cover up the family whereabouts in 1871 Census and the adoption of Burdett as a surname plus the divorce proceedings between her parents this may indicate that little if any contact was made between the children of Maurice and their father. This however, is speculation.

A daughter Eliza Athalie Minia Davis was born to Ellis and Anita GRO Birth Index March qtr 1903 Marylebone 1a 520. She was known as Athalie Davis and became a silent film actress in the early 1920s.

I will post on her marriage and son and the issues surrounding her relationship with her husband.

    Default PETER COOPMAN 1922-1943- BERTRAM-ATHALIE

In this post I will provide data on Peter COOPMAN 1922-1945 the son of Bertram Coopman and Athalie Davis. Peter was to die in WW2 in a tragic accident when serving as a sergeant in the RAF on Lancaster bombers.
In addition, there are several newspaper accounts describing the court case involving Athalie's mother Anita aka Nita aka Annie Davis nee Davies and her son in law Bertram Coopman.
The Jewish Chronicle March 21 1924 describes the King's Bench claim against Bertram Coopman made by his mother in law Anita Davis and an earlier case taken by Athalie against Bertram for breach of promise and seduction.
"Mrs Anita Davis widow of a Member of the Bar of Goldhurst Terrace Hampstead sued Mr Bertram Coopman of Benheim Gardens Cricklewood to recover £200 under letter of agreement, addressed to the Plaintiff, by which he undertook to pay that sum in consideration of her withdrawing an action she had taken against him.
Defendant counter claimed for damages alleging that plaintiff had wrongly harboured his wife that the latter had remained from his house and society and had been detained at a house unknown to the defendant....in 1922 the defendant first met the Palintiff's daughter Miss Athalie Davis, an actress. They became engaged, but as the daughter was only seventeen the engagement was not made public.
In May 1921 the defendant seduced the girl.Mrs Davis discovering in July following her daughters condition.
She told the defendant that the only thing he could do was to get married as soon as possible. That was apparently his view, but after consulting with his parents he said they objected to the marriage.
October 21,1921 the Plaintiff began an action against the defendant for the seduction of her daughter and on the same day the daughter sued him for damages for breach of promise of marriage.
Plaintiff and her daughter then went to Paignton, Devonshire and on 1 February 1922 a child was born to the plaintiff's daughter. On March 21 1922 affiliation proceedings were taken in Devonshire, and the daughter obtained an order against the defendant. On July 13 when the two actions were about to come on for hearing the defendant called on the daughter at her mother's home and the young couple agreed to get married. The marriage was fixed for July 21 1922...."

Both Bertram and Athalie belonged to the same Synagogue.

    I will post further.

    Default PETER COOPMAN 1922-1943 PARENTS

The parents of Peter Coopman as posted previously were Bertram Coopman and Athalie Davis.
The GRO Birth Index Record for Peter Coopman shows 2 entries and a note:
BIRTH March qtr 1922 Peter Coopman mother's maiden name Davis Totnes 5 b see M27 which is a late entry referring to March qtr 1927 Totnes 5b 199.

    Marriage
    Bertram F COOPMAN -Eliza A M DAVIS Sept qtr 1922 Hampstead 1a 1731

From the London electoral register entries it is clear that Athalie lived with her mother for some years and during the early 1920s Athalie was starring in silent films and on the stage. Where Peter Coopman her son was is unknown.
His father Bertram was living with his mother in the 1928 London Electoral Register at 46 Blenheim Gardens Willesden. Bertram was to re-marry to Madeliene Estelle Hart daughter of Edward Hart and Natalie Lyons. Marriage June qtr 1931 Paddington 1a 199 Bertram F Coopman-Madeliene E HART
    Bertram died in 1994:
GRO Index Bertram Frederick Coopman b 11 Jan 1900 -death Sept qtr 1994 Age 94 Surrey C3A 7612C
His 2nd wife died 1962- Probate Madeliene Estelle Coopman of Avington 31B London Road Guildford (wife of Bertram Frederick Coopman) died 17 Oct 1962 The Royal Surrey County Hospital Guildford Probate to Bertram Frederick Coopman senior air traffic contoller £6008 0s 8d

Peter Coopman married Elizabeth 'Betty' Joyce PEILL 1917-1989. I will confirm marriage data.

During WW2 Peter Coopman was an RAF Sergeant Wireless operator and air gunner on Lancaster bombers. The Ulceby War Memorial records his death and that of all the crew members of two Lancaster bombers which collided mid air over Ulceby 16 December 194. Their target was Berlin. Peter was 21 when he died and is buried ( see photograph of his tombstone) Cambridge City Cemetery 103 Squadron.
Ancestry.Com family trees show that his wife re-married. There were no children from the first marriage.

GRO Marriage Index records indicate that Athalie Davis aka Eliza Athalie Minia Davis was married 3 times:
Cyril A PEARKES -Eliza A M COOPMAN or DAVIS
    April qtr 1933 Hampstead 1a 1600

Interestingly, by 1937 Cyril Arthur Pearkes ( his father was Arthur E Pearkes, Solicitor) was living alone at 129/31 Fellows Road Hampstead- London Electoral Registers and in 1933 at 17 Great Portland Street.
He re-married to an Esther ( last name to be researched and confirmed) and in 1946 they were living at 9 Lyndhurst Road Hampstead.
If he is the same person then there is a Death Index record for Cyril Arthur Pearkes b 8 August 1894 died Dec qtr 1875 Leeds 5 04348

Peter Coopman Married Elizabeth J PEILL Sept qtr 1943 Pershore 6c 527 but was killed 16 Dec 1943 as previously described.

The 1939 England and Wales Register (Copyright TNA)RG101 Series shows:
Eliza A M DAVIS b 27 Jan 1903 Divorced Actress Retired Unpaid Domestic Duties
Nita DAVIS b 4 July 1869 Widow Unpaid domestic duties
Living at Droskyn House Truro Cornwall.

Importantly, see thread Maurice Davies-Amelia Hart 22.4. 2013 #2 where the GRO Birth Record and the Divorce proceedings between Maurice Davies and Amelia Hart recorded their daughter Elizabeth DAVIES b 4 July 1867. There is a 2 year difference between the 1939 census and the actual birthdate for Annie Elizabeth Davies but I have no doubt based on earlier data that Elizabeth aka Annie aka Anita aka Nita are one in the same.

Eliza A M Davis as posted earlier in this thread is Athalie Davis actress who married Bertram Coopman and had a son Peter Coopman who died WW2.
