It helps that I also had a Howells in Stockton at the same time (not related, unfortunately), as well as some Stockton based railway workers and RNR's

Is there any way to push it back one more generation? John & Anne's parents?.
As has been established Anne is John's 2nd wife and not Benjamin's mother, whose name is Mary.

It's not going to be easy to find either the marriage for John and Mary, or their baptisms. There's quite a few possible John Howells/Mary marriages and we don't know where they married or when. I'l do some rooting about later.

Btw, any idea why Ben would move from well Wales to Durham? I understand work but seems a bit of a hike with family in tow
Jomot has given you a probable reason and informative answer as to why they'd move from Wales to Durham.

    1861, Merthyr Tydfil, RG9; Piece: 4057; Folio: 16; Page: 36
John Howells 73, labourer iron works, Glamorganshire (frustratingly no town name entered)
    Ann Howells 53, Breconshire
    Gwenllyan Beynon 29, married, Breconshire

Thanks for the help so far, very informative. Jomot1's given me an idea why they moved northeast.

It's likely pushing it but if grandparents can be tracked, thanks in advance.
