Discover your family tree at Durham County Record Office, when its popular family history courses return this spring.

Led by an archivist, the course introduces people not only to family history, but to the Record Office and the resources available. The course aims to provide beginners with the tools and knowledge they need to take the first steps in tracing their ancestry. It course covers civil registration, the census and parish registers and there is the chance to explore the purpose of the source, what information it contains and how to use it.

Dawn Layland, education and outreach archivist at the council said: “This is a great chance to get started on your family tree and find out about the fantastic resources available on your doorstep.”

The course takes place at Durham County Record Office. It will run on Tuesday evenings from 6pm to 8pm on April 24, May 1 and May 8 and Thursday mornings from 10am to noon on April 26, May 3, and May 10. The cost is £30 per person for each course. Call 03000-267-626.
