Jersey has it's own set of records and rules. These sites might help you.

A very, very warm welcome to Brit-gen.

The obituary in Dominion, 29 Dec 1909, has birthplace as "... the Isle of Wight." What's the source of "Jersey Channel Island" as birth place?

Yes, some information says he was born Isle of Wight, and a 1841 channel Island census says he was born in Jersey about 1832. This could be a different Richard Butt. Thank you for your help, much appreciated.

Thank you so much for this information. If this is my ancestor Richard Butt it looks like he is with a Smith family, could he be orphaned or adopted. There is also some uncertainty about the place of birth, it might be Isle of Wight not Jersey.

Have you considered purchasing the marriage cert? It's on New Zealand BMDs etc (33 dollars?) - however no guarantee that father's name will be present(deceased/illegitimacy)

Yes have a copy of his marriage, no parents details. Will check the death certificate.
