Thank you for that KathNZ, I think it ties it all together nicely - there's definitely an IOW connection shown by the birth of Benjamin; Richard Butt, son of Mary/Marie Cabot may also have been born IOW, though he was baptised in Jersey where his mother was from, and where his father died.

Marie Cabot/Smith appears to stay on Jersey and appears in the 1851 – 1881 census entries.
I haven’t been able to find Richard Hartley Smith anywhere after 1841. As for the children, the only one who seems to want to be found is Mary Julia Smith who married James Preston in 1855, had a daughter Mary Catherine Preston in 1859 then disappears after the 1861 census.

FindMyPast has voyage details (1851 and 1852) of a Richard James Butt, born St Martins, Jersey, on 24 June 1832. A second record for Richard Butt, born Jersey, details 1853 and 1854 voyages.
The voyage details are in "code" and the National Archives has a page entitled "Abbreviations in merchant seamen's records" (1835-1972)."dyfal donc a dyr y garreg"
