Default Telegram from King & Queen

I have a telegram from the King & Queen expressing their sympathy to my Great Grandmother on the loss of her son, killed-in-action at Ypres. Clearly the next-of-kin of all officer casualties did not receive such a telegram, so what was the criteria to send such a telegram? Was it because he was a Major and telegrams were sent to nok of all Majors and above? Or was it because he was the holder of a DSO?

    Christina,

Thank you but it doesn't answer my question. I know how the next-of-kin of officers and 'Other Ranks' were informed. My question is what was the criteria for a telegram to be sent on behalf of the King and Queen to a next-of-kin?
