Hi
The only Neil Wh*te I can see in 1891 census is Neil White aged 4 born Strone Argyll and a boarder
3 Wooden Cottages, Kilmun, Dunoon and Kilmun, Argyll
Jane McCaul 60 head Enish, Lochboisdale
Neil White 4
James Devlin 28 Lodger Gardener Renfrew, Greenock
Finlay Redman 19 Lodger Assistant Grocer, Renfrew, Greenock
Bernard Dockerty 24 Lodger Labourer Ireland, Donegall

1901 Still with Jane McCaull
Strone Place (sunk Flat)
Jane Mccaul 67 kilpheder, South Uist

If this is your Neil the censuses aren't much help with parents.

Searching on Scotlands People for a Neil Whyte/White 1886-1890 only brings up one result. Neil Whyte birth registered 1890 registration district Kilfinan ref 518/22
BUT this one is on the 1891 census on familysearch.org no others in the household shown
Neil Whyte Age 1
Born Argyllshire
Registration District: Kilfinan Argyllshire
I am still looking to confirm it on ancestry.com - can't see him in the censuses but this seems to be this Neil Whyte's military record on familysearch.org
Neil White
Military Service 1917
Residence Place Argyllshire, Scotland
Age 27 born c 1890
Birthplace - Kilfinan, Argyllshire
Military Company/Regimen - Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders
Military Regiment - 775/350405
Battalion - 16th, 3rd Provisional Battalion
Not having access to the original census images means I can't check the original for transcription errors.

I think that the first thing that you need to do is find his birth certificate. For that, you need Scotlands People. It's a pay to use site, but you can open an account and then search the index free, you have to pay to download certificates. See HERE. That'll give you the names of both parents plus where and when they married.
As far as I can see, they have birth certificates for 3 Neil Whytes b. 1886, but none in Argyll & Bute. I can't get any further without using my own credits.
You could also check the 1891 census (when, as a child, he should still be with his parents)

Hi christanel,
I found it in his Attestation for General Service in 1916 in the New Zealand Army in which he quotes his Father was Donald Whyte and his Mother was Janet. In question 20 have you ever served in any Military Force he has answered Palmerston North Rifles NZ and the Argyle & Sutherland Highlanders (Vol) he was Disharged in1918 as being no longer physically fit, his serial no was 44811 Rank S/Serg.

Hi christanel,
I think that could be him on the Gothic as in the NZ Electoral Roll there is a Neil Linton Whyte in the 1905-1906 Manawatu Roll occupation storehand.
