Default Regiments in the channel islands, 1810s

    Hi.
I am searching for information on my 4x great grandfather.
He was based in Guernsey around 1810 to 1815. He had 2 sons born there.
However, I can not find any information on the sons' births or the regiment he was in.
All I have is a transcription of their births. No parents names at all.
I do have the fathers name on a marriage cert.
Can anyone point me in the right direction to finding my grandfathers regiment?

Even though the channel Islands are part of the UK, its proving difficult to get info and I have no idea why.

    Regards
    Janette

Start with a name, not a place.

A transcription of what original document?

    Peter,

Thank you for your reply. I do have a name, which I got from a marriage cert. It was his sons marriage.
However, I have searched his name with his sons listed as relatives, searched with a date he was in Guernsey and still no luck.
It’s as though he vanished after the birth of his children.

His name was Isaac Wright. Born around the late 1780s . His son George was born abt 1811. His youngest son was born 1814. Both sons born in Guernsey, apparently they were both military births.
What that means I have no idea.
His name, and the birth of his sons is all I have. Can’t find anymore information.

Do you realise you can get the birth certificates of the two sons from GRO? I would have thought you would want at least one of them.

Even though the channel Islands are part of the UK,
    Actually they're not!

The islands are not part of the United Kingdom or European Union, but rather are possessions of the British Crown with independent administrations. Their inhabitants are British citizens.

The primary place to look for service records of that period is in National Archives series WO97 (Royal Hospital Chelsea: Soldiers Service Documents). These records are available online at Findmypast. Discharges up to around the 1850s (can't remember exactly) are indexed by name in the National Archives catalogue.

I can't see an Isaac Wright.

Perhaps he died in service in which case records are going to be hard to find.

If you're prepared to spend some time at the National Archives, I can suggest some alternative series which are sometimes productive so far the Royal Artillery is concerned.

If the birth certificate mentions the man's unit, we will be well on the way to finding more from pay and muster records. Otherwise there are published sources we can refer to.
