That 1841 find helps a lot....

Marriage 8 Jun 1835, St Wilfrid, Kirkby in Ashfield - William Scothorn & Ann Hill

ADDED: Witnesses: Thomas Bowmar & Hannah Hill.

The 1871 census for the two Thomases (21 & 12) has them working for / living with William Bowmar.

    Gratty,

I think instead of just clicking the 'thanks' icon on posts you need to come back and answer the major question of 'how have you got back to Thomas, born c1850, son of William Scothern and Ann Hill'. We need census references; bride, occupation(s), father's name and occupation, date(s) and place(s), from marriage certificate(s), and their children.

As you can see from the details in this thread, there's a lot of confusing stuff out there. I'm already going

Thanks to you all. I have just found a Thomas Hill born in 1850 which I think may be Thomas Scothern. Fingers crossed.

Why would you think it was registered under Hill? If it's the one in Basford in 1850 then the mother's maiden name is Fretwell:

    HILL, THOMAS mmn FRETWELL
GRO Reference: 1850 M Quarter in BASFORD Volume 15 Page 472

Until 1874 it was the responsibility of the registrar to ensure births were registered - not the parents - and it's believed that around 15% of births therefore went unregistered. This could be the case with Thomas.

Thanks for trying. I am so totally confused with this family. The only thing I can say for sure is that Tom (Thom) Scothern married Jemima Leivers Wright in 1872. Tom died 2.3.1927. On the 1911 census his age is 62 years, which gives approx 1850 as his date of birth.

Sometimes a low tech approach helps.
Get a big bit of paper and draw a tree. Start with the data you are sure of, in ink. Then add the stuff you think is right in pencil (so you can rub it out and change it). Make a copy, and add (in another colour) the stuff that's vaguely possible..
It's amazing how things click into place when you see a diagram on paper!
