Welcome to the British-Genealogy forums Pargolf

If you came to us from Forces War Records reading this will tell you the connection to us.

Unfortunately it can be very difficult to find service records for those who served in WW1 because more than 60% of records were destroyed by bombing/fire in WW11. What do survive are the the Award and Mdeal records and the Medal Roll Index cards. Unfortunately these very very rarely have any personal information on them
The companies licensed by The National Archives to let you access these records online are the pay per view sites Findmypast and ancestry.com. Both do have a free library version so your local library may have one of them.

I will see what I can find

This looks like his Medal Roll Index card
    Ernest A Mills
Regiment or Corps: Gloucestershire Regiment, Labour Corps, King's Royal Rifle Corps, Royal Engineers
    Regimental Number: 20704, 417120, 58643, 604921
He received the Victory and British Medals and served in 4 different regiments by the looks of things. In WW1 service men could be issued different regimental numbers as they were moved to different regiments where the need was greatest.
So we now have 4 regimental numbers to use in the search.

The GRO index has his birth reg with his mother's maiden surname transcribed as Ballenger.
There are three other Alfred Ernest Mills born in the UK 1889 +/- 2 years so without a service record I can't see a way to be sure this is your father's brother.
