Thank you so much for your help, this is new to me and it's fantastic to find out something of my family history. May I pick your brains as to which sites are best for Irish family history not only military. As you can tell I know very little. Terry

Ok so Edward Wilde jnr born c1878 and married 1908. He says his father was a Sgt major in the US cavalry. If his father was the young age of 20 when Edward jnr was born that would make him age 50 in 1908. Not knowing a date of birth for Edward snr means it is hard to pick one from the ones that show up in the US censuses and none of them are in the US cavalry. Maybe that was a flight of fancy on young Edwards part to maybe cover up illegitimacy. I think the US cavalry bit can be put to one side for now and concentrate on young Edward in Ireland.

Hi,the thought did cross my mind,as I have been unable to find any record of EWjr. birth unless it's in some parish records also same for Sarah Agnes...found her on a census still living at home but no birth record.
The other thought was if EWsnr was say 30 not 20 that would put him bang in the middle of the potato famine when vast numbers emigrated to America......EWjr mothers name is stated as Catherine on his army records....is there any way a couples names can be put in a search together?........oh to have Jules Vernes time machine.....thank you again

Just a wilde (sorry ) thought - when he married could young Edward have possibly said 'Sergeant Major Ulster Cavalry' to the vicar and the vicar misheard?

There is another point to consider. The image available online to which gortonboy posted the link in post #11 is a copy of the entry in the original marriage register. Although the registrar has signed to say that it's a true copy I know that registrars do make mistakes when copying. I think it might be worth trying to get a copy of the original entry in the RC parish register if possible.
