terminology 18th century

I am researching a soldier in the 18th century - 1780s - in the 1st regiment of Foot, 2nd battalion, (The Royals
or Duke of Argyll's Regiment). I've found his records of promotion and am going through muster rolls to track his
movements. Two questions re terminology
a. John Fraser , promoted Lt to the addl (additional) company 28th Dec 1778. Can anyone shed light on what
'additional' (later 'independent') company means. Or is it just the obvious meaning?

b. from the additional company ......14th October, King's leave. Is King's leave just the term for getting time off or does it have any other meaning?
