Default Birth registered twice? ... or 2 people?

Could a birth be registered twice - same Office, same quarter, same name or must this be 2 seperate Thomas Wilfrids? (possible I guess if they were cousins, say, named after a grandfather - rather than 2 random unrelated people, which would be possible too)

Thing is - I don't want to go on any wild goose chases, but I've found 1 infant burial but not with the father's name I was expecting.

The page numbers are different, so do seem to be different births.

The Gro website has different mother's maiden names.

Was the father's name John William? The 1911 census has a family including John William Robinson 38, his wife Annie Gillespie Robinson, and children including Ruth and Mary Gillespie who both have MMN Bell. Conveniently their 1911 census return also has a Thomas Wilfred and Edith Robinson who are crossed through, both births had MMN Bell. JWR and AGR had seven children born alive, five still living and two who had died, as there's five children on the census in addition to the two crossed through that Thomas Wilfred presumably had died before the 1911 census.

Peter, what is the name of the father of the Thomas Wilfred you are researching?

It's the MMN - BELL family I'm looking at, and also I've found that 1911 census entry, with the 2 entries for the 2 dead children crossed out (that was a usefull mistake by JW to list all his children before he crossed the 2 out). The other children all tie in.

So, a seperate ROBINSON/TODD family it would seem. Will have to pick my way carefully now!

So there is! That would account for the father's name not being the one I expected.
The one I've found so far is the 'wrong one'.
    Back to the drawing board.

Thanks for that almach - I'm going to have to get used to checking on the GRO site not just FreeBMD, as obviously mmn is a very useful thing to know or eliminate.

    Cheers, MTS
