Hi there,
I recently obtained my grandfather's military records. During WW2 he was involved with both the British North Africa Forces (BNAF) and the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force (MEF). In his records there are references to him having "embarked at a port in CMF". Also there is reference to being posted from a staff pool to "METC surplus to WE(?)", and "taken on strength WE(?) METC. He was also "Posted to ME School of Infantry from METC".
So I am wondering to what CMF. WE, METC and ME School of Infantry refer? I've scanned the usual sources for help with these but can't get anywhere - can you help?
Thanks - Gareth

HI Gareth
ME = Middle East (from AWM site glossary)
WE = War Establishment ditto
CMF = Central Mediterranean Force (from WW2Talk abbreviation list)
METC = Middle East Training Centre ditto
I hope these are right!

That's great thanks! Got a couple more if you and anyone can help? A line item on his record says:
Emb[arked] for UK A/S GP16 (?); SOS [struck off strength] 1 MCC [possibly I MCC] & X(viii) a
Any thoughts on this?
Also, what would being posted to the ""Y" List (E) Class A Release" means, and the subsequently being released to Class Z of the Reserve (Class A release)?
thanks!

Update on Class
Hi,
Just seen post.
Interpretation from similar entries on my father's Service Record, with (hopefully) helpful links:
Class ‘A’ Release means being demobbed and integrated into the reserve.
Class Z - Class A - X Code : X (viii) - British Army – WWII

Released to Class ‘Z’ (T) is to the Royal Army Reserve.
Class Z traditionally stood for the Army Reserve: when a soldier was demobilised, he was first transferred to “Class Z” (hence the expression: “Released to Class ‘Z’”).
Demobilise Class Z

‘T’ means released back into the Territorial Army, but discharged into civilian employment
