    I've just had a look into this, and apparently the fee was charged under the Marriage Duty Act 1695. I've found a number of references to this online and in my own reference books, but the only one giving the amount chargeable is this one:

    I'll concede on this one. You convinced me. It is 2 shillings and sixpence. (Half a crown).
    However the fee was for the Crown not the church, it was a war tax as explained in the genguide article you referenced.
