Well! that is certainly food for thought. It set my mind off down several tracks, some of them worth writing up into a story perhaps ...
Sadly, our dear friend Ann (alias Ladkyis) passed away on Thursday, 26th. December, 2019.

My guess is, it will be a rather short story going back further, or forward.
Too many bones, too much sorrow, but until I am dead, there's always tomorrow.

Without Googling it I seem to remember Arnold Schwatzenegger in a comedy western and his character's name was 'Handsome Stranger' - as he naively explained his mother named him after his father.

Derbyshire: Kirk Ireton, Holy Trinity, General Register: 1754:

Thomas ye Son of a Stranger Baptised August 25th 1754.

My thought: Is there something strange about the fact that 3 out of 4 Sons of a Stranger are called Thomas?????

I'd also been wondering if the phrase 'a stranger' was used to just mean the father's name was undeclared rather than being unknown, like a 'passing' stranger would be?
Or, were these foundlings at the church door or similar?
    Are the mother's names given?
Finaly - there's no chance it's 'son of A. Stranger' is there? and that some Abraham Stranger or Augustus Stranger had been profilic?

    Cheers, MTS

Mothers names are not given in the register at that period. No use of initials on any other entry to be "A. STRANGER". Also not seen any burials for the Thomas' that were Baptised with repeated use of same first name....

What about the possibility that Stranger means someone without settlement in that parish? They might possibly be known to some in the parish.
