Well, darn! I won't send for that certificate then... Susannah Smith is listed as Susannah Lowe, daughter of Susannah Albiston (maiden name Lowe, daughter of Thomas Lowe) in the 1871 census. Mark Albiston is not with them, he must have gone ahead to America already, as they followed in 1872. But on Susannah's marriage to Robert Emmett in Fall River in 1878, she's listed as Smith, with parents John and Eliza. In 1880, she's living with Susannah Albiston in Fall River, along with Robert. Mark died in 1874, and his widow remarried in Nov 1880. You can see why I thought Susannah Smith was the pre-marriage daughter of Susannah (Lowe) Albiston!

I'm assuming this 1871 census is your folks, and if so Susannah is listed as Albiston, not LOWE, in view of this does it mean there's no record for Susannah the younger in the name of Lowe?

Sorry DebbieAnn, I hadn't seen your post where you list the 1871 census but it doesn't list Susannah as LOWE, so do we take it there's no record where she's known as LOWE, in which case we need to find Susannah Smith's parents and establish who they are?
Do you have immigration records for your folks?Alma

The above census matches up well with the 1851 census. I'm wondering if John Smith in 1841 (pity the1841 doesn't give relationships) is Susanna's son born before she married John/Jonathan, if so he seems a likely candidate for Susannah Smith's father.

Then we are singing from the same sheet. I can find a marriage between a John Smith and an Elizabeth Lowe, but not in Cheshire or Lancashire but Warwickshire.
Name: John Smith
Spouse's Name: Elizabeth Lowe
Event Date: 02 Dec 1849
Event Place: Saint Phillips,Birmingham,Warwick,England
ETA: Do we know Susannah's mother's surname was LOWE. or could it be another name? As Susannah would be grand dau to Susannah Lowe, wife of John/Jonathan, if John Smith is her son. I suppose your train of thought is: Susannah Smith now Emmett living in America in 1880 next door to Susannah Albiston must be related as she's with the Albiston's in 1871, BUT entered as Susannah ALBISTON daughter. Do we know the two Susannah's - Smith and Albiston are the same person. A passenger list may help, but I've had no luck finding one. I did find Mark Albiston on the US 1870 census and calculated he must have left for America between 1868 and early 1870, even with that small window I couldn't find him, I'll try again.Alma

I'm going to wait until I get the birth record back - if John is Jonathan's step-son, Eliza may not even be a Lowe!
