Yes, I've attacked this line several times over the years. Every time I think I've got part of it finally straightened out, something else pops up! Wondering if I'm EVER going to be able to put this one to bed!

Christina meant that it's free to sign up/register/search the historical births and deaths indexes. You have to pay for any certificate, but the PDF download option is considerably cheaper than a certified copy.

Ah - was hoping it meant the info was free! Well, it'll be processed on 5 Jan, meanwhile it seems Mark Albiston and his wife Susannah Lowe had 6 children, not just the 4 I knew about, between 1852 and 1900, so I have to locate the other 2, which I assume died before they could be in any census. I have Mary (1852), John Thomas (1861), Eliza Ann (1864), and Martha Ellen (1868), all born England. They moved to the US in 1872, when Susannah would have been 40, but I can find no children born to them in Massachusetts where they settled. So while I'm waiting for certificates, that's my next project...

There were SO MANY Lowe families - it's almost as bad as Smith's! My Susannah Lowe that married Mark Albiston was the daughter of Thomas Lowe and his wife Mary Ann France. Thomas was the son of Thomas Lowe and his wife Ann Dumelow, so still no connection I can find between Eliza Lowe and Susannah, though one of Susannah's daughters was named Eliza Ann. So why would they have "adopted" the daughter of Eliza Lowe and John Smith? Surely there were closer relatives who'd have taken her in! It's not like they stayed in the area so Susannah Smith could be near other family members - they took her to America with them...

On FreeBMD on the same page of marriages is a John Smith and an Eliza Lowe. Sept 1/4 1849 Stockport registration district.
Sorry to disappoint you, DebbieAnn, but the Eliza Lowe who married Sept qrt 1849 married Joseph Jackson; John Smith married Ann Woolley.

I've been trying to get my head round your folks, not at all easy is it? Do you have a record for Susannah Smith/Lowe, one where she's using the surname LOWE?
