For a number of years I have been trying to find the death one John/Herod/Herrod or Harod. We know he lived in Saxthorpe/Corpusty around the 1840's and 1850's.He married Charlotte Bateman and they had a son, Robert, in 1857. They also had twin boys in 1855, but they died in 1859. Family lore states that he was press-ganged, but there is no proof in that story.Charlotte went on to marry in 1867, in Northumberland, to Peter Harrison. On their marriage cert. Charlotte is down as a widow. We can't find a record of John Herod's death in Norfolk or Northumberland. The spelling of the surname has changed from time to time. Any help on this mystery would be appreciated. Thankyou.

She is Charlotte HARWOOD, Married, Charwoman, age 26, born Saxthorpe, with her 4 year old son Robert W HARWOOD at Briston Norfolk in 1861.

The spelling of Harewood is another variation of Herod. Robert was always Robert Herod. Of course, spelling errors happened all the time, but she was widow in 1867.Is there a death for a John Harewood for 1857-67? The mystery goes on!

Have a look at FreeBMD for a possible death, not necessarily in the area he lived in. You have a relatively short timespan to look at.

A very long shot, but check records for other North East counties. Some men from Norfolk moved up to the North East of England to work in the coal mines. The pay was better.

Thankyou for your post.My ancestors were in that group of people who moved to the North East to seek work, but we think that John Herod/Harrod etc was not amongst them.Charlotte did move and eventually married Peter Harrison.Did she know her first husband was dead or he had simply disappeared? What was the law regarding being able to marry again if your spouse was no longer around after a certain number of years? Would press-ganging be still going on at that time? It is a bit of a Lord Lucan mystery!
