    Default War Substantive Flying Officer

What was the role of this title my father was given during the WW2? What was his job?

As I understand it, substantive means permanent as opposed to temporary. However "war substantive" means the rank is substantive but only for the duration of the war. After the war an officer would normally revert to his substantive rank. Flying Officer is a rank and doesn't necessarily imply any particular role - it could be a wholly ground based role.

I'm ready to be corrected by someone who knows what they're talking about.

Thanks Peter but I knew that. However I have written to the War Office for further information as my father was in many countries such as France, Germany and Iceland. I have been told many stories of what he did from himself but whether they will be confirmed, I am unsure.

    Welcome to British-Genealogy, lionella7.

Your fathers' service records are still held by the Ministry of Defence. Details of how to apply for them can be found in this link.

In addition to the forms you will need to send thirty pounds and a copy of his death certificate.
